This room is really a bit more than a ham shack; it's "my" room, where I do most of the things I do. This is the stereo. The picture is taken from the back of the massage chair, which is located in the sweet spot of the speakers. The speakers are Martin Logan Vistas. I got these speakers because my long time speakers are way too big for this room - they overpower it and all one hears with them is the near field. These turned out to be a whole lot better than I expected. They are very good. They utilize a "hybrid" electrostatic design. This means that the lows are reproduced by the traditional coned speakers visible in the bottom portion of the speaker unit. The midrange and highs are reproduced by the electrostatic membrane that occupies the rest of the speaker unit. They excel at clarity and spatial "width". The speakers are bi-amped, meaning that there are four discrete channels of power amplification - one for highs and one for lows for each side. Each channel is driven by a Bryston 7B 700 watt mono amp. The preamp is also Bryston. The source is usually either an Ipod or a CD player. I never record MP3s on the Ipod, instead I use the Apple lossless standard. That makes the reproduction as good as a CD. I can also watch Direct TV here and I can run the TV audio through the stereo, which I don't do all that often. I sometimes also run the computer audio to the stereo through an Edirol 66. Sitting in the massage chair and listening to my favorite music on this system is just about as good as it gets. |
