I think that is a National NC183 on the bottom of the rack that sits on his desk.  The transmitter looks to be homebrew.  The unit just above the operator's head is a B&W 51SB SSB Adaptor or Generator (thanks to WA2ZDY for that ID).

This was the shack of Clifford Harvey, who was one of the partners in the firm Harvey-Wells Inc, which was an early manufacturer of radio equipment.  I am not actually sure when this picture was taken.  Ed Zeranski clued me in that the radio in the relay rack right behind the tape recorder is an RAL (it actually looks like two different pieces of gear).  This receiver weighs 80 pounds and its power supply weighs another 56 pounds.  It is a WWII-era shipboard regenerative receiver covering 300 khz to 23 Mhz in nine bands.  The 5 tube TRF design has some neat features that make it very desirable for CW work.  I do not recognize the rest of the gear, but I'm willing to bet that most of it was from Harvey-Wells. You can see more about Clifford Harvey at: The Harvey Radio Labs Page
